Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

A Child in Need

An email from a friend who's 4 year old nephew is in serious need. Please help if you can. Her email is below:

As some of you know, my nephew Zane recently had most of the left half
of his brain (temporal lobe, hippocampus, and ?amygdla?) removed in
the hopes it will cure the epilepsy that has been giving him
progressively more brain damage with each seizure. The surgery went
great and he seems to be in good shape, and we hope that the MRI he
will have at his first followup appointment next week will show that
his brain swelling has decreased significantly. He has not had any
seizures yet, which is a really good sign, and his autistic behaviors
seem to have decreased somewhat (though not as much as we had hoped).
We are grateful for his smooth passage through this difficult surgery.
You can find more information on his condition at

Unfortunately, the insurance company is covering the surgery at 80%
because it is "out of network" -- even though there is no one in the
Missoula-based network capable of doing this specific surgery. Twenty
percent of even just his most recent hospital stay (9 days this time)
is astronomical, plus the constant travel between MIssoula Montana and
the Childrens Hospital in Denver Colorado has been a major drain on my
sister and brother in law's already strained finances. Their wonderful
friends have organized a raffle to help raise money to pay for their
medical expenses, there is more information below.

(There are other prizes as well)
SEE below for details. Sorry for any duplications!

PLEASE purchase a raffle ticket to help a family with a 4 year old boy,
Zane, who has epilepsy, autism and sensory processing disorder.
Zane recently had brain surgery in Denver, which will hopefully cure
his epilepsy! He's doing well and we have 5 weeks left to finish
raising our goal of $50,000 to help this family.
The money raised will go to help pay for the family's umpteen trips to
Denver and for medical expenses not paid.

The drawing is May 1, 2010 , ONLY 2000 tickets are being sold, and you
don't have to be present to win.

A $25 ticket includes:
An all expense paid trip for 2 to Florence, Italy
An all expense paid trip for 4 to Disneyland and Universal Studios
A golf vacation in Polson and Whitefish for 2
(Each prize above is worth $6000)

If you would like to purchase tickets, please either email me directly

The Roof the Roof the Roof is

leaking!  AH!  Do any of my Georgia peeps know a good roofer or even ones to avoid?  We need to find out what is causing the leak by an expert so they can tell our insurance company to see what is covered.  Hopefully the roof repair and the inside damage.  Halp?

One of my new responsibilities is designing us a better website. I currently have FrontPage but think maybe there is a better option for web design. Thoughts?
